Biographie

Andrea Acri a été formé aux études de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est, avec une spécialisation en philologie sanskrite et vieux javanaise ainsi qu’en études religieuses, à l’Université de Rome «  La Sapienza » (Laurea, 2005) et à l’Université de Leyde (MA 2006, PhD 2011). Il est maître de conférences en études tantriques à la section des Sciences Religieuses de l’École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE, PSL University, Paris) depuis fin 2016, et, du 2021 au 2024, chercheur associé à l’École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO, Paris) dans le cadre du projet ERC Synergy DHARMA. Avant de rejoindre l’EPHE, il a été affecté en qualité d’enseignant-chercheur à des institutions en Inde (université de Nalanda), à Singapour (Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre/ISEAS et Asia Research Institute/NUS), en Australie (ANU) et aux Pays-Bas (IIAS.) Il est membre du comité de rédaction du Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, du Journal of Yoga Studies et du Jurnal Kajian Bali/Journal of Bali Studies. Il a reçu plusieurs bourses et subventions de recherche, dont un financement JCJC de l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) (projet MANTRA, « Maritime Asian Networks for the Transfer of Buddhist Tantra »), deux bourses du Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) de la British Library, et deux bourses de collaboration internationale de l’American Academy of Religions (AAR). Formé aux études de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est, avec une spécialisation en philologie sanskrite et vieux javanaise et en études religieuses, ses principaux intérêts de recherche et d’enseignement portent sur l’histoire religieuse comparée de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est à l’époque médiévale (en particulier le shivaïsme ancien dans le sous-continent indien et à Java et Bali) ; la circulation du bouddhisme tantrique à travers l’Asie maritime à l’époque médiévale ; les études sur le yoga ; la philosophie indienne ; l’art et l’architecture hindous et bouddhistes de Java ; et les continuités et changements dans les discours religieux javanais et balinais de la période prémoderne au XXème siècle. Ses principales publications comprennent les monographies Dharma Pātañjala (Egbert Forsten/Brill 2011 ; Aditya Prakashan 2017 ; traduction indonésienne EFEO/KPG 2018), Dari Siwaisme Jawa ke Agama Hindu Bali (EFEO/KPG 2021, réimpression 2022), et les ouvrages édités Tantra, Magic, and Vernacular Religions in Monsoon Asia (avec Paolo E. Domaines de recherches

Les recherches d’Andrea Acri portent sur l’histoire religieuse de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est médiévale (en particulier le shivaïsme ancien dans le sous-continent indien, à Java et à Bali), étudiée de manière comparative à la lumière de sources primaires en sanskrit et en vieux javanais ; la circulation du bouddhisme tantrique à travers l’Asie maritime à l’époque médiévale ; les études sur le yoga ; la philosophie indienne ; l’art et l’architecture hindous et bouddhistes de Java ; et les continuités et changements dans les discours religieux javanais et balinais de la période prémoderne à la période moderne. Il prépare actuellement une édition critique et des traductions anglaises du texte shivaïte en sanskrit et en vieux javanais Bhuvanakośa, ainsi que du poème (kakavin) en vieux javanais à thème religieux Pārthayajña (en collaboration avec Thomas M. Hunter). Il travaille également à la rédaction d’une monographie dans le cadre du projet MANTRA, «  Maritime Asian Networks for the Transfer of Buddhist Tantra » (ANR-22-CE27-0015), qui applique la métaphore géo-environnementale de l’Asie maritime à l’étude de la circulation du tantra bouddhique parallèlement au mouvement d’agents, de textes et d’objets dans cette vaste aire géographique interconnectée.
