The third edition of the Vienna Summer School on the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia.

The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia, under the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna, will be hosting the third edition of the Vienna Summer School on the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia. The event is now part of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Eurasian Transformations’ initiative (https://www.oeaw.ac.at/eurasian-transformations/).

The Summer School is scheduled to take place from July 8th to July 13th, 2024, in Vienna, Austria.

This year’s theme, ‘Philosophical Perspectives on Language in Premodern South Asia’, promises an engaging exploration of South Asian philosophy of language, offering participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding in this field with hands-on contact with original texts. We encourage you to share this announcement with students – both undergraduates and graduates –who have a keen interest in South Asian linguistic theories and possess an intermediate to advanced proficiency in śāstric Sanskrit.

The summer school is also an opportunity to earn ECTS credits.

Due to the intensive nature of the program, enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Although the application deadline is set for May 31, 2024, we recommend early submissions. This advice is especially pertinent for international participants who may require a visa to enter the European Union.
