That which the speaker does not intend to say ».
Exceptionnellement, la séance aura lieu un jeudi.
Résumé : The early Grammarians assign a key role to the speaker’s intention (vivakṣā) in the way meaning is communicated and, therefore, discuss how it affects the formation of words and sentences. But they also pay close attention to avivaksã, that which the speaker does not intend to say, both in the sense of that which is willingly left unsaid and that which is unwillingly expressed, namely, grammatical information that is indispensable (nāntarīyaka) insofar as it is necessarily required by Sanskrit morphology, but not relevant to a specific verbal context. The talk will examine some of the most significant passages in the Mahābhāṣya and the Vākyapadīya and consider the linguistic and philosophical implications of avivakṣā.
