Workshop “New Research in Sanskrit Yoga Literature”

The École française d’Extrême-Orient is organizing, on Friday, March 11, 2022, the study day entitled “New research on Sanskrit works about Yoga”, accompanied by the photographic exhibition “Sadhu, yogi and other ascetics. Sadhu, rsi, yogi meet all over India”.

Members of the GREI (EA2120) will speak at the event

We are pleased to announce that members of GREI (EA2120) will speak at this event:

  • 2:00-2:30 p.m.: Andrea Acri (École pratique des hautes études, GREI), “From Isolation to Union: Pātañjala vis-à-vis Śaiva Understandings of the Meaning and Goal of Yoga”

Texts presented and discussed

Among the lesser-known texts to be presented and discussed on March 11, the seventh-century Śivadharmottara advocates secular devotional practices, except for the tenth chapter, which presents a śivaita yoga ; the Dharmaputrikā and the Vṛṣasārasaṅgraha, two treatises, perhaps from the same period, are often transmitted in Nepal in the same manuscripts; the Yogabhāskara, on the other hand, is a Vishnuite work from the sixteenth century.

Event in conjunction with the exhibition “Yoga. Ascetics, Yogis, Sufis” (Musée Guimet)

This study day and photographic exhibition on yoga and ascetics at the EFEO are being held in conjunction with the Guimet Museum, which is presenting the exhibition “Yoga. Ascetics, Yogis, Sufis,” from February 2 to May 2, 2022. In seventy works as precious as they are little known, this exhibition explores representations of asceticism. The exhibition “Yoga. Ascetics, Yogis, Sufis” is complemented by a program of meetings, visits and workshops, including an eponymous symposium on March 19, 2022: https://www.guimet.fr/event/yoga-ascetes-yogis-soufis/
