Colloquium “Documenter et décrire les langues d’Asie : histoire et épistémologie”

The SHESL 2022 colloquium entitled “Documenter et décrire les langues d’Asie : histoire et épistémologie”, under the scientific responsibility of SHESL, HTL, TIC and Germanic countries, will be held from January 26 to 28, 2022.

Georges-Jean Pinault, member of our team (EA2120 GREI), will speak on January 27 at 2 p.m. (plenary conference entitled: “Iranians, Tocharians, Turks: languages, texts and cultures of Central Asia”).

This symposium proposes to approach, from a historical and/or epistemological point of view, the activities of documentation and description of the languages of Asia. “Asia” is to be taken here in the broad sense attributed to it by the Asiatic Society, that is to say as designating a zone extending from the Maghreb to the Far East.

“Asian language documentation and description activities” means:
– on the one hand, the collection of linguistic data, in all its forms (lists of words, constitution of archives, funds, “linguistic survey”, questionnaires, audio and/or video recordings, corpus , databases, etc.);
– on the other hand, the development of tools making it possible to represent, in synchrony or in diachrony, a language: writing systems, grammars, monolingual dictionaries, lexicons, translation tools (for example bi – or trilingual dictionaries), manuals, treatises on poetry, rhetoric, etc.
