The Department of Religious Studies at Florida International University is searching for an open rank tenure-track or tenured (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) candidate to serve as the Bhagwan Mahavir Professor of Jain Studies. The start date is Fall 2022. A Ph.D. in Religious Studies or a related appropriate field is required. ABD candidates will be considered with the expectation that the Ph.D. is completed before the start date. The candidate will demonstrate a record of teaching excellence at the college or university level. Candidate must be proficient in English and have knowledge of at least one language of India, have published works on Jainism and other religions of India, pursue a substantial research agenda, and should have significant field experience in India. A secondary specialization in Hinduism, Buddhism, environment, medicine, ethics, or feminist theories and/or experience in interreligious dialogue is preferred but not required. The candidate will teach a regular 3-2 load and will focus on a range of courses about the religions of India in general and Jainism in particular, and background in the field of religious studies and knowledge of world religions is desirable. The person hired will work closely with the Jain Studies committee at FIU as well as the Jain Educational and Research Foundation (JERF) to organize lectures and symposia and oversee and develop exchange programs in India, including summer study programs and tours. The department, with twelve full time members, offers B.A. and M.A. degrees, and is located within FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).
