The Religious Studies Faculty in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University invites applications for the Gurudev Kanjiswami Postdoctoral Scholar in Jain studies, beginning July 16, 2022. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, fiscal-year appointment (July 1 – June 30). Renewal up to three years is possible on an annual basis contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of funding, and the needs of the program.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses (6 credits) per semester, which may include undergraduate and/or graduate classes both online and in-person. In addition to courses providing a core understanding of Jain traditions, others may involve the postdoctoral scholar’s area of specialization and general religious studies interests, allowing the postdoc to reach a broader audience. The postdoc will also conduct research and publish scholarship.
Qualifications
The successful candidate is required to have completed a Ph.D. from an accredited institution of higher education in a field related to the academic study of Jain traditions by the time of appointment and demonstrate strong evidence of (or the potential for) excellence in research and teaching related to this academic field. Candidates must be within five years from receipt of their doctoral degree. Candidates who are non-US citizens must have current authorization to work in the United States.
Desired qualifications may include research on Jain traditions and formations as they intersect with a focus on history, contemporary issues, anthropological, sociological, and religious studies’ approaches exploring Jain communities and practices in South Asia and the world. Research themes may include religious nationalism, minority politics, caste, race, social justice, gender, health, environment, migration, diaspora, global networks, and/or media politics. Additional desired qualifications include evidence of academic engagement through research, grants, publications, conference presentations, and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success while working with broadly diverse student populations.
